Lucinda House Pins

Lucinda Yates is the founder of a jewelry design company with a unique twist.  Having suffered through homelessness herself, she went on to start "Designs by Lucinda" a company which helps non-profit organizations raise money through the sales of among other designs, House Pins.  The pins are sold for $15, half of which will come right back to the affiliate.  This fundraiser is being led by Donnel Horn.  Committee members are selling the pins and display boards are also set up at HAHFH Administrative Offices, Sarka-Kauffmann Jewelers and Talbots.  Show your support with a purchase!

What is the Women Build program?

Women Build is an initiative of Habitat for Humanity International which provides a comfortable environment for women to construct a home.  It is not about excluding male volunteers, instead Women Build seeks ways to include women volunteers.  Women make up 50% of Habitat for Humanity’s volunteers overall but are less than 15% of the volunteers at work sites.  The Women Build program educates women in basic construction skills as well as raising awareness of the disproportionate number of women and children living in poverty conditions.  Nationally, more than 60% of Habitat homes are built with women as the head of the household.

The number of women and children who live in substandard and poverty conditions in the United States is cause for action on our part.  In the U.S. alone more than 12 million children-one out of every six-live in poverty.  Children who are raised in poverty have been found to have higher rates of birth defects and illnesses as well as cognitive and educational disabilities.  Habitat for Humanity and the Women Build program strive to eradicate poverty and substandard housing conditions.  Each family who partners with Habitat not only recieves the benifits of homeownership but also is an example that poverty housing conditions can be overcome by action from the community at large.
