About Us

Apply for a Home

If you would like to apply to become a Habitat homeowner, there are certain criteria you must meet for selection into our program. Huntington Area Habitat
is looking for families who:

  • Live in housing that is substandard, in bad condition, or is overcrowded;

  • Have a steady dependable income that enables you to meet the requirements of home ownership. We follow income guidelines based on the number of people in the family (see guidelines below);

  • Have a good credit history in handling your debt. In our evaluation of your credit report, we do not consider medical bills as part of your debt. You must not have filed for bankruptcy within the last five years;

  • Are willing to partner with us by providing 350 hours of work, called "sweat equity," on our Habitat houses, including your own.  While you will be responsible for about 175 hours as the applicant, you may enlist the help of friends to donate their hours toward your total 350.

    If you are approved, you will have the opportunity to purchase a new home at a very low price through a 25-year, interest-free mortage loan provided by Huntington Area Habitat. You'll be required to make a down payment of approximately $460.00, and be faithful in making your monthly mortgage payments which will average about $250.00 a month.
